Arcane Vander Sketch

This is a sketch of Vander from Arcane that I made in order to show how I would color a greyscale image:

I am presenting you a method I came up with that will give you more control in the colorization process.
The main idea is to use the common techniques, whether it be color-layer mode, overlay or color dodge
in combination with smart masking through the “color range”-selection and the “hue/saturation” slider. It will give you a solid base that DOES NOT look muddy or monochromatic.

This method only works for Photoshop as far as I know, because Photoshop’s color range selection is quite unique.
It creates masks with transparency while other programs just choose colors similarly to the magic wand tool: with a hard cut.
